About the BIP
The BIP Just Transitions: Politics of Cohabitation in Times of Environmental Crisis, organised by the University J. E. Purkyně in Ústí nad Labem in 2026, suggests renewed ways of approaching the politics of cohabitation in times of global environmental crisis. As living beings relocate or strive to adapt in face of ongoing climate change, the crisis presents a range of actual challenges, including migration, territorial modification, species extinction as well as search for a viable pathway for nature restoration. Aiming to rethink both human and non-human adaptability, the BIP elaborates on the crucial role of imagination in our understanding of cohabitation with the "otherness". To analyse the political tensions between cultural memory and cultural innovation, the BIP compares various past-oriented revisions and future-oriented planning related to interspecies symbiosis and environmental care. To discuss our ability to conceive just transitions through climate change mitigation and adaptation, the BIP adopts a multiscale approach aiming for a local contextualision of global challenges, and it correlates two specialised ways of exploring this topic via philosophical concepts and geographic inquiry. The BIP benefits from a unique setting in Northwest Czechia, one of the European target areas of the current just transition efforts for carbon-dependent regions.
